Basement Organization

I had intentions of keeping the basement storage room organized, really I did! Then the girl child started to grow, and not knowing what the future would bring, I packed her clothes into totes and put them downstairs. More and more totes collected, then I tried Space Bags, then in a desperate move to get her closet cleaned out, I just packed clothes into a trash bag. Then came the boy child. Many friends generously passed clothes down to me for him and I added those bags to the basement. Add in our camping gear, household items that are only needed once in awhile, and things that just need to be stored and you get a WHOLE LOT of STUFF. Of course, any hopes of organization went out the window the first time I tossed a bag full of clothes in the room and thought "I'll get to that later."

Knowing we wanted to foster/adopt a child we saved everything because we didn't know what age/gender child we would be getting. now that we have the boy child I have started to purge. I passed on whatever baby gear I could to friends and a lot of the girl child's clothes have gone to my SIL for my niece but there is still a lot left. I sold some things at a consignment sale in the Spring and I'm gearing up to do another one in a few weeks. I have most of the clothes hung and almost everything is tagged. I also found a few household items that I could list on a Facebook garage sale group page that I belong to.

Besides the desire to be organized, there is a secondary purpose to all this purging. My husband has started grad school and needs a quiet place in the house to work. We have a room upstairs that we have been using for an office but unfortunately my books and yoga gear have started to take the room over. With the basement cleaned out we were able to move a desk and the computer downstairs and my husband got his own Man Cave - complete with fishing poles, bows, and a picture of Elvis on the wall.

Now that I'm on the way to having the basement done the next room is the office upstairs. I found a desk and chair on Craigslist that I'm going to repaint and I picked up two bookcases from Target. They're just plain white but I'm going to cover the back inside with fabric (thanks Pinterest) to make them a little more snazzy. I'll post pictures of that when it's done.
